Sri Lanka’s Hidden Paradise

The Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka is a significant ecological and tourist destination. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority’s 2023 report, the Knuckles Conservation Forest attracted a total of 141,205 visitors, comprising 123,223 domestic and 17,982 international tourists.

The Knuckles Mountain Range spans across Matale and Kandy districts in central Sri Lanka, covering an area of approximately 185 km². The range gets its name from its five prominent peaks, which resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from a distance. With over 35 peaks, some reaching heights of 2,000 meters (6,562 feet), Knuckles offers a unique highland experience.

Knuckles is one of Sri Lanka’s most important ecological regions, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The range features cloud forests, grasslands, and cascading waterfalls, creating a thriving habitat for many species. Among the 1,000+ plant species found here, many are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Wildlife enthusiasts can spot leopards, sambar deer, purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels, and a diverse range of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The cool climate and dense forests make it a haven for rare and endangered species.

Unlike Sri Lanka’s tropical lowlands, the Knuckles Range has a cool and misty climate with frequent rainfall. The best time to visit is between June and September, when the trails are less muddy, and the weather is more favorable for hiking.

The best time to explore Knuckles is from June to September, when the weather is relatively dry and the trails are more accessible. The monsoon season brings heavy rains, making some paths challenging, but it also enhances the region’s beauty with lush greenery and powerful waterfalls.

Whether you’re an adventure enthusiast, a wildlife lover, or simply seeking tranquility in nature, the Knuckles Mountain Range offers an unforgettable experience. Its untouched landscapes, rich biodiversity, and thrilling hiking opportunities make it one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable natural treasures.
